Max Payne 3 is an upcoming third-person shooter video game developed by Rockstar for Windows, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. So why do we care?

We do because this is the third game in the highly successful Max Payne series. It is highly anticipated game, due to release in early 2010.

The game was originally scheduled for release in late 2009. However, it was pushed back to 2010 alongside several other Rockstar Games in order to ‘benefit from having more development time’. Or to put it straight, the recession hit Rockstar hard, real hard.

It is set twelve years after the first game timeline. The game takes place in Sao Paulo, where Max is working as a security officer working for a wealthy local family. To us, this seems to be a bit of a step-down for Max Payne. A security officer is ok and all but it is NOT cool and cool is something Max must be.

According to Rockstar’s Sam Houser, “This is Max Payne as we’ve never seen him before, a few years older, more world-weary and cynical than ever.” Apparently, Max has left New York behind for Sao Paulo; his appearance has also drastically changed. He is bald, has grown a full beard and has gained a noticeable increase in weight. He also no longer wears his trademark leather jacket which marked him out as a video game icon.

What! Oh come on! A paunchy, bald, drug addict instead of a suave smooth hero?  By any standard, this isn’t Max Payne. By making all these changes, Rockstar seems to run the risk of losing loads of Max Payne fans. But, they might gain a lot of new fans as well. When was the last time we played with an unhandsome video game hero?

Game play has also significantly changed from the previous game. Max can now use humans as natural ‘shields’. The game play has also shifted to a third person perspective from the first person perspective of the past two editions. Like most third person shooters, the cover system will feature in Max Payne 3, though Rockstar clarifies that it would not be ‘the focus of the game’.

Max will be able to perform life-saving kill shots (similar to the final stand kills in the Call of Duty games) should he be near death. If he manages to kill his killer before the screen goes black, he’ll spring back to life thanks to an adrenaline boost.

Max Payne will also feature standard Multiplayer palate. Nothing special though.

The game is designed with Rockstar’s RAGE Engine with Natural Motion’s Euphoria. Since this engine incorporates video game physics, many objects in the game are destructible, such as crates. Rockstar used scanning equipment to help capture the real-life feel of the Sao Paulo ghettos.

All in all, Max Payne 3 promises to be a highly enjoyable game albeit a controversial one. One issue we have with it? We don’t want to wait till 2010! Give it to us, Now!
